Salem district in Tamil Nadu, India

Salem District is a district of Tamil Nadu state in southern India. The city of Salem is the district headquarter. Other major towns in the district are Mettur, Omalur and Attur. The district is well connected by rail and road networks.

Salem district is known for its Mangoes, Steel and Mettur dam, which is a major source of irrigation and drinking water for the state of Tamil Nadu.

History

Salem was the largest district in Tamil Nadu before it was bifurcated into two as Salem and Dharmapuri districts. Later, Salem district was again divided with the formation of the Namakkal district.The first cinema theater named Modern Theater was in Salem.

Salem is known for its quality educational institutes, ranging from Government schools, Arts and Science colleges to Engineering colleges. Salem has 2 Universities one is Periyar University and Other is Vinayaka Mission University (Deemed University). And there are many Medical Colleges (inlducing of Dental, Homeopathy, Siddha, Yogic and Naturopathy Colleges).Salem also famous for its SAIL(Steel Authorities of India Limited)steel company near Salem ,MALCO(Madras Aluminum Company Limited) and Chemplast Sanmar Limited (famous Chemical manufacturer) at Mettur Dam and JSS Steel company at Potaney near Mettur Dam.Mango is very famous, especially Malgova(A type of Sweet mango).Its border to Karnataka.

Demographics

It had a population of 30,16,346 as of the census of 2001. It is 46.09% urbanised.1 The district has a literacy of 65.72%, one of the lowest in the state.
