In language

Saying excuse me or please and thank you, are considered as showing general courtesy.

In body language

Human cultures have varied ways of showing respect by bodily actions. In many European cultures, people shake hands. In others, such as in Japan people bow at the waist when meeting.1 Frequently, gender is a factor in how respect is displayed in bodily behavior. For example, women in many Western cultures traditionally curtsy, whereas men bow.1

Military

As a sign of respect in almost any form of the military is a salute. A salute is used by enlistees to show respect to the postition held by officers (and vice-versa; to not return a salute to a subordinate is considered offensive) and by officers to those of higher rank. 23 The 21-gun salute is done within the military for funerals of military members and for high-ranking civilians such as the President. 4

In organized crime

Some organized crime syndicates, both real and fictional, revolve heavily around the theory of respect. Hired men and those lower in the rank of the family are obligated to show "respect" to the mafioso.56

Crimes of revenge

There are many cases in which perceived disrespect has led to murder and other violence. 78
